Our “counselor” is driving me batty. I was told that he lost his last job for incompetence and was sent here as a result. I believe it. He always finds the shortest route to doing the least amount of work possible. He is vain and finds himself funny. He will only admit to mistakes in jest. His excuses are lame and I am tired of them.
Today he enrolled a girl into the wrong program. This limits her choices of classes. I tried to explain to him why this was the wrong program but he wouldn’t listen. I then went to the senior teacher in the other program who used to be in my program and asked her and she agreed with me. Now I have to e-mail the counselors and get it in writing that I am correct.
As near as I can tell he is not doing his job when it comes to tracking students. I do all the phone calls and tracking that I can, but he is not doing his end. I try to discuss this with him and he says he doesn’t have time. The problem is that we are being paid by the student and for student successes. If he doesn’t know who is where, then how can we collect on this? Again I have offered to track them for him or create a program for him to do this, but he refuses saying he doesn’t do “that computer stuff”. Since it seems to be impossible to fire someone I guess we just have to live with it. There is good and bad to this policy. It prevents firings due to the fact that people don't get along, but allows incompetence.
And speaking of incompetence, there is a teacher here who is from the high school that seriously needs to retire. She doesn’t want to teach anymore, but she says she cannot retire due to the money. I am supposed to be training her to use our system at the other school, but I’m not sure if she even wants to do it. She is being given another chance but again, she isn’t sure she wants it.
Our Internet was out last night when I came to work. I called the head of technology and he called the chief computer geek and bottle washer and he came over and did a few things here and a few things at the technology center and made it all good again. It is amazing how quickly he got it back up.
